Eco Church is part of ‘tectonic shift’

A Rocha UK’s Eco Church award scheme has been welcomed by former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams as part of a ‘tectonic shift’ in Christian culture.

Launching Eco Church at St Paul’s Cathedral on 26th January, Dr Williams said environmental concerns need to ‘embed more deeply’ into the Church’s mindset. ‘But progress has been made,’ he told his audience, ‘you here tonight are a part of that.’

About 300 people packed out the cathedral crypt – which was illuminated green for the launch. Using iPads available at the reception, people saw Eco Church just after it went ‘live’ with advice on applying environmental issues across the spectrum of church life.

rowan at st pauls 2 (1)Former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams is helping UK churches to become green – starting with St Paul’s Cathedral. Dr Williams launches A Rocha UK’s Eco Church award scheme there today (26th January).

The former head of the global Anglican Communion will present the cathedral with the first ever Eco Church award. Managed by environment charity A Rocha UK, Eco Church equips congregations to become more eco-friendly. An online survey and resources help churches respond to environmental issues across congregational life.

‘After recent climate change talks in Paris, Eco Church helps churches integrate environmental care through worship, management of buildings and land, community and global engagement, and personal lifestyle of church members’, said A Rocha UK’s Dr Ruth Valerio.
