She is the only woman to have walked across the world’s last wildernesses to both poles and climbed the highest mountain on every continent. Now Jo Gambi will take others to greater heights – by leading A Rocha UK’s first ever adventure conference next spring.
The second British woman to have conquered Everest’s North/North East Ridge, Jo (pictured below) will give a key talk at Wild Wonderful World – which is about ‘reconnecting faith, adventure and caring for God’s world’.
A committed Christian, author and explorer, Jo will enthuse the young – and young at heart – with stories of faith, courage and a determination to make links between adventure, faith and caring for God’s world.
Run in partnership with Oxfordshire-based outdoor pursuits centre Adventure Plus, the event will include practical options from bushcraft and bonfires, through to kayaking and wildlife trails.Read more...
More than 80 delegates attended their Sunday morning service, which the organisations have led for the past decade.
VARIETY OF WILDLIFE
‘We’re very grateful to the Birdfair organisers for enabling the Sunday service to take place,’ said Rev John Townsend, who led the worship event. ‘The service gives visitors and exhibitors alike an opportunity for reflection and prayer in beautiful and abundant rural surroundings.’
Theme of this year’s Birdfair was ‘Eastern Mediterranean Migratory Birds’. That gave Chris Naylor – A Rocha International CEO and acting CEO at A Rocha UK (pictured) – the opportunity to offer insights from his new book, Postcards From The Middle East.
‘I’ve been coming to Birdfair for years and can usually be found chatting ... Read more...
Pioneering environmentalist Norman Crowson (pictured) is stepping back from leading Dronfield’s Lea Brook Valley Project, one of A Rocha UK’s Partners In Action.
A special farewell will be part of the scheme’s tenth anniversary celebrations Dronfield Going Wild this month. As people enjoy the activities and learn about wildlife, they’ll be expressing their gratitude to Norman, too.
TEEMING WITH LIFE
‘I want to say a huge “thank you” to Norman for his vision, determination and passion,’ said Conservation Director Andy Lester. ‘The Lea Brook Valley project wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for his leadership and enthusiasm.’
When Andy was first introduced to Norman by A Rocha UK Chair Steve Hughes, he was struck by the fact that ‘in Norman there was no messing around – it was all about “getting the job done”’.
Hard work by Norman and a team of volunteers from across a ... Read more...
It was written in a mountain hideaway as eagles soared up the valley below. Published in time for United Nations climate change talks in Paris, A Christian Guide To Environmental Issues focuses on A Rocha UK and its associates across the globe.
Penned by A Rocha UK board member Rev Margot Hodson with her husband Martin (pictured), the book takes eight environmental issues and offers a biblical reflection on each one. ‘As far as we know, nobody has taken this approach before,’ said the couple.
The Hodsons wrote their manuscript on sabbatical in Spain, mostly in a mountain retreat. ‘A special highlight was sitting on the terrace of our apartment at breakfast,’ said Martin, ‘and watching the booted eagles flying up the valley below.’
They ended their sabbatical trip at Cruzinha, A Rocha Portugal. ‘It was October, but felt like mid-summer, and ... Read more...
So that’s exactly what the charity is doing. Since the recent departure of Head of Fundraising Lisa Ostenson (pictured), A Rocha UK has put out a call for her replacement.
Now working in a similar capacity with World Wildlife Fund, Scotland-based Lisa helped the money materialise for a number of key conservation projects. They include the urban nature reserve at Wolf Fields – among other A Rocha UK initiatives.
Lisa’s work has paved the way for even more fund-raising activities. ‘This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team,’ said Conservation Director Andy Lester.
A Rocha UK highlights Wolf Fields as a good example of how fund-raising can change a desperate situation. ... Read more...
