The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it
Creator God, Lord and lover of all you have made, we bring to you Creation’s lament and pain and our own yearnings and fears of what may be.
At this crucial time for people and planet, we offer you our prayers for COP27 in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt.
For all involved as they arrive at the conference, coming with weighty responsibilities and expectations, we pray they are kept safe. We pray that practicalities may run smoothly so nothing detracts from the critical work at hand.
For activists and observers from civil society, we pray they are able to participate safely, and that they may have access and ability to engage meaningfully in the talks.
For conference delegates and governments, including our own, we pray they truly grasp the urgency and scale of the climate crisis and that they are able to work together to collaborate on global climate solutions.
We pray for our Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, that he takes seriously the importance of national moral leadership on climate change. We pray for Alok Sharma as his presidency of COP formally ends, that he continues to be an advocate for climate action, and for Sameh Shoukry who has now taken on the role of COP27 President.
For those coming from countries in the Global South we pray that their voices are properly prioritised, platformed and truly heard by wealthier nations in talks. We pray that the cost of attending does not exclude those from countries facing the devastating impacts of climate change from crucial decision-making.
As climate finance is discussed on Wednesday 9th November, we pray that wealthy countries live up to vital commitments to support lower income countries at the front-line of climate breakdown and deliver on the long-promised $100 billion of climate finance.
For your Spirit of justice, joy and life to be listened to in these coming weeks, in desperation – and in hope – we pray in Jesus name,
Amen.
