Those were just some of the seasonal celebration ideas that emerged as people let A Rocha UK’s online Advent calendar open new windows on their Christmas festivities. Packed with practical eco-friendly ideas from how to choose a ‘happy turkey’ to recycling Christmas cards, the charity’s unique resource helped families and individuals create a Christmas that was kind on both pocket and planet.

And some of them responded with further ideas of their own on social media. ‘We’re using the train,’ said one A Rocha UK supporter about their Christmas travel, ‘and the kids are excited about the adventure.’ Others chatted on Facebook about how they used different vegetables to make an unusual spread on the festive table. And the Christmas tree issue sparked a whole load of ideas – from artificial trees to a tree made of books!

‘Many people don’t know that fir can be coppiced,’ said another supporter on social media. ‘You can cut branches from a mature fir or even take the top off as a traditional “tree”. If a skirt of green, living branches are left, the tree will sprout new growth in the following year.’

There was a massive response, according to Churches And Theology Director Dr Ruth Valerio, who led the team that produced the resource. ‘Churches, families and individuals across the country have been singing the praises of our Advent calendar.’

Congregations from Enfield to the Isle of Man shared news about the eco-friendly resource in their own newsletters and magazines – thanks to Parish Pump – the online treasure trove for church magazine editors. Parish Pump had been offering their subscribers extracts from A Rocha UK’s calendar. And a huge number of church publications snapped them up.

‘We’re delighted with the project,’ said Ruth. As a result, plans are underway for something different and exciting this year!’
