Speaking Up For The Silent Earth

speaking up for silent earthShaping stories to safeguard God’s earth. That was the aim of a recent training day held by A Rocha UK.

About 40 people represented various regions across England – from Devon and Derbyshire, to London and Lancashire. They converged on All Hallows-on-the-Wall, a Church of England centre in the City of London.

Many of them were part of A Rocha UK’s network of speakers available to speak on a variety of environmental and theological subjects, in a range of settings. Others were assessors for A Rocha UK’s Eco-Congregation scheme, which is designed to motivate and resource Christian communities to incorporate environmental stewardship into their spiritual values and practical action.

They all benefited from the talks and activities. The content was designed to equip and inform them in their voluntary work promoting the work of A Rocha UK across these islands.

The all-day programme was led by Churches And Resources Manager Nigel Hopper and Churches And Theology Director Dr Ruth Valerio. Also contributing were Chief Executive Officer Mairi Johnstone and A Rocha International’s Advisor for Theology and Churches Dave Bookless.

The team gave updates on latest developments in A Rocha UK, introduced the charity’s new promotional publications and shared practical ideas on such topics as how to use the Bible in their speaking.

‘Most delegates were very appreciative,’ said Nigel Hopper. ‘They felt it was a very worthwhile event. At the end, we blessed them on their way with a free flash drive – packed with presentations and resources for their work.’

One of the attendees, David Hogan from Exeter, said later, ‘It was good to meet staff and volunteers for the first time – and to get a better feel for the aims and objectives of A Rocha’.

Glenys Hulme of London said, ‘I liked Nigel’s talk – he makes complex things simple – the gift of a good teacher’. Those who couldn’t attend are encouraged to apply for the free flash drive. ‘Many thanks for the memory stick,’ said David Primrose, ‘with excellent A Rocha resources!’
