2015 is the International Year of Soils. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the Soil Association are working to help raise awareness of the importance of soils with their “wear your wellies week” in March.
Soils underpin life on earth. Healthy soils are the basis for healthy food production and are the foundation for vegetation which is cultivated or managed for many uses. Soils not only support the planets biodiversity but also host a quarter of total global species. Soils help to combat and adapt to climate change by playing a key role in the carbon cycle. They store and filter water, improving our resilience to floods and droughts. Soil is a non-renewable resource and its preservation is essential for food security and our sustainable future.
